A bichromatic microscope configured and optimized for the viewing and interpretation of analytical ferrograms. The instrument provides both reflected (red) and transmitted (green) illumination so ferrograms may be illuminated from above and below the stage. With bichromatic illumination, metal particles appear bright red while nonmetallic particles appear green, enabling visual differentiation during microscopic ferrographic analysis of used lubricants, hydraulic fluids, coolants and fuels.
